A new community-led project aims to ensure that the memories of Private Kyle John Adams, Private James Prosser, and Corporal Michael John Thacker continue to live on for generations to come through the creation of a Memorial Mural and Reflection Garden at Llantarnam Grange, Cwmbran.

Remembering Three Local Heroes

Each of these men dedicated their lives to serving their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice while deployed in Afghanistan.

Private Kyle John Adams (1988–2009)

Serving with 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment, attached to the Special Forces Support Group, Kyle was killed on 6 August 2009 during a patrol north of Lashkar Gah. He was just 21 years old.

Kyle is remembered as a loving son, brother and friend who brought humour, energy and positivity wherever he went. Described as the life and soul of any gathering, his dedication to his fellow soldiers and his determination to rise to every challenge made him a respected and admired member of the Armed Forces.

Private James Prosser (1988–2009)

James served with 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh and was killed on 27 September 2009 when the Warrior vehicle he was driving struck an improvised explosive device in the Musa Qaleh district of Helmand Province.

At only 21 years old, James was known for his kindness, leadership and infectious sense of humour. A keen sportsman and cherished friend, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Those who knew him continue to remember him as a true hero and someone who always put others first.

Corporal Michael John Thacker (1985–2012)

Serving with 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, Corporal Thacker was killed on 1 June 2012 whilst manning Observation Post “Tir” in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

A devoted husband, father, son and brother, Michael was affectionately described as a “soldier’s soldier”. His leadership, warmth and larger-than-life personality earned him deep respect throughout his military career. His sense of humour and unwavering support for others left a lasting legacy among family, friends and fellow servicemen.

Creating a Place of Remembrance

The proposed Memorial Mural and Reflection Garden will provide a permanent space where residents and visitors can pause, reflect and pay tribute not only to Kyle, James and Michael, but to all soldiers who have served.

The project will transform an area provided by M Cwmbran at Llantarnam Grange into a meaningful community space featuring:

A professionally commissioned memorial mural honouring the three servicemen

A peaceful reflection garden with seating areas

A dedicated place of remembrance for soldiers past and present

A memorial plaque and information stand developed with input from the families

Educational resources, including a QR code linking to further information about their lives and service

Long-term preservation and maintenance to ensure the space remains a fitting tribute for future generations

Supporting Local Creativity and Community Involvement

A key element of the project is community participation.

Renowned military artist Simon McCouaig will mentor local Cwmbran art students in the creation of the mural, providing a unique opportunity for young people to contribute directly to an important community legacy while learning from an established professional artist.

The wider project will also create opportunities for local schools, veterans, community organisations and residents to become involved in shaping and supporting the memorial.

The Fundraising Goal

To bring the vision to life, a fundraising target of £50,000 has been set.

Every contribution will play an important role in creating a lasting tribute that reflects the gratitude and respect of the local community.
